Project Summary:
The CLEAR-PC project addresses the critical issue of low health literacy (HL) in the prevention and care of prostate cancer (PCa), recognizing that inadequate HL hinders the understanding of complex medical information, limits shared decision-making (SDM), and increases health inequalities. Given the high prevalence and complexity of PCa, the project aims to design and develop a comprehensive strategy to improve HL in PCa prevention and care, considering individual capacities, the role of healthcare professionals and organizations, as well as the influence of social and cultural contexts.
For the design and development of this new strategy, we apply action-research and co-creation methodologies, as the participation of all stakeholders (the general population, vulnerable patients, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and other target groups) ensures that the resulting strategy is person-centered, feasible, and tailored to their needs.
The design and development of the new strategy will follow a systematic cycle:
- Diagnosing the problem by assessing individual contexts, healthcare professionals, organizational aspects, and the social framework;
- Adapting existing HL tools to the specific context of PCa prevention and care, integrating them into a new strategy, followed by usability and acceptance evaluation;
- Observing real-world outcomes and reflecting on them.
Co-creation will be a key component throughout the entire process, ensuring that the involved actors actively participate in each phase, from identifying challenges to refining and validating solutions.
The consortium, composed of institutions from Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Cyprus, leverages its multidisciplinary expertise to develop innovative tools, both digital and non-digital, and educational resources to reduce public health disparities, combat misinformation, and support decision-making in PCa prevention and care.
