Project Objectives and Methodology

The main objectives of this study are: 1) to evaluate the potential impact of ozone therapy on the rate of disc herniation surgeries and 2) to estimate the cost-effectiveness ratio of ozone therapy compared to standard treatment. Additionally, the study will estimate the utilities of patients with disc herniation, quantify the socio-economic impact of the disease on society, and develop a decision-support tool to promote shared decision-making. A cohort study will be conducted with patients on the waiting list for disc herniation surgery, who will be offered ozone therapy without renouncing the planned surgical intervention. The primary outcome measure is the percentage of surgeries ultimately performed in each group (with or without ozone). Data on pain, quality of life, functional disability, return to work, and resource utilization will also be collected. Variables will be assessed at baseline, on the day of treatment, and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The follow-up period will be 12 months. The results of the study will provide better insight into the value of ozone therapy in managing patients on the waiting list for disc herniation surgery. Additionally, it will contribute to the development of a more patient-centered healthcare system.
