Objectives and Methodology of the Project
Economic evaluations are part of the decision-making process in health policies, affecting healthcare professionals, patients, and the general population. It is desirable that both decision-makers and professionals, as well as the general public, understand the key messages of these economic studies. However, this data is not always presented in formats understandable to non-technical audiences.
The objective of this study is to design three formats (text, infographic, and video) for summarizing an economic study (cost-effectiveness of a health technology) and to measure the comprehension of the key message and its acceptability among decision-makers, healthcare professionals, and the general public/patients. This will involve: a) three randomized trials with online surveys to assess objective and subjective understanding and perceived usability; and b) a qualitative study to explore barriers and facilitators of understanding and preferences among different audiences.
The aim of this proposal is to generate a series of recommendations for health economists on the best ways to present economic data to different non-technical populations and to raise awareness among economists about the importance of delivering results in appropriate formats.
