Background:

Diabetes is a highly relevant health issue in the Canary Islands and a major concern in child and adolescent health across the region. The condition requires a series of healthcare decisions in which it is essential to involve the patient and their family, so that their values, preferences, and lifestyles are taken into account. Through the development of accessible strategies and tools aimed at improving pediatric diabetes care, this project aims to foster wider implementation of Shared Decision-Making (SDM), encouraging greater engagement of patients and their families in healthcare decisions.

Objective:

To promote Shared Decision-Making (SDM) in pediatric diabetes care.

Methodology:

The project will be structured into the following subprojects:

  • SP1: Systematic review of the scientific evidence on the use of Shared Decision-Making and decision aids in managing pediatric diabetes (ages 10–16)

  • SP2: Development of a decision aid tool through a collaborative platform enhanced with Artificial Intelligence

  • SP3: Evaluation of the acceptability and usability of the decision aid tool for shared decision-making

  • SP4: Design of a training module for pediatric healthcare professionals focused on promoting SDM in pediatric settings

  • SP5: Development of motivational educational materials to support the adoption of healthy habits and self-management of diabetes by pediatric patients and their families
