Description
Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) developed within the framework of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Programme of the Spanish National Health System, coordinated by GuiaSalud. It was developed by a multidisciplinary group of national experts, under the methodological coordination of SESCS, with funding from the Spanish Ministry of Health for the development of activities under the Annual Plan of the Spanish Network of Health Technology Assessment and Health Services Agencies (RedETS), approved at the Plenary Meeting of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System on 4 April 2025.
Coeliac disease (CD) is a systemic immune-mediated disorder caused by the ingestion of gluten and related proteins that affects genetically susceptible individuals. Despite advances in knowledge and the development and refinement of diagnostic tests, CD remains underdiagnosed.
A multidisciplinary panel comprising physicians from the different clinical specialties involved in the management of the disease (including representatives from 13 Scientific Societies), other healthcare professionals, researchers, methodologists and patient representatives has developed this protocol for the early diagnosis of CD, promoted and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
Based on the best available scientific evidence, this protocol covers the care provided by Primary Care and Hospital Care physicians within the Spanish National Health System to people of any age with suspected or at-risk CD. It focuses on the early detection of CD, while also addressing key aspects of the care of people with CD, including treatment, clinical follow-up, refractory disease and malignancy.
