KEY POINTS

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most prevalent peripheral compression neuropathy worldwide. Clinically, it presents with sensory deficits (paresthesias, hypoesthesia, neuropathic pain) and motor deficits (weakness of thumb pinch, loss of manual dexterity).
  • Stenosing tenosynovitis is a common hand pathology caused by inflammatory or degenerative thickening of the tendinous structures. It manifests as locking or catching of the finger during flexion-extension, often associated with pain at the base of the finger and significant functional limitations.
  • Sono-Instruments® (Spirecut) are sterile, single-use medical devices indicated for the ultrasound-guided percutaneous treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger. The intervention is minimally invasive and performed through a single-entry portal, without skin incision or tissue dissection.
  • The scientific evidence available on the use of Sono-Instruments® devices for the ultrasound-guided percutaneous treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger consists of a single study with a small sample size (30 participants) and with conflicts of interest.
  • The study shows that the intervention achieved technical success and efficiency in all procedures performed, both for carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger.
  • The evidence supporting the use of Sono-Instruments® is currently very limited, preventing the establishment of solid conclusions regarding their effectiveness and safety. Furthermore, no ongoing studies have been identified. Well-designed comparative studies are needed to determine whether the device offers advantages over existing therapeutic alternatives.
