Objectives

General: To develop a decision support tool (DST) for patients with knee osteoarthritis candidates for primary total knee arthroplasty, and to evaluate its effectiveness compared to usual care.

Specific:

  1. To evaluate the scientific evidence on the development, acceptability, and effectiveness of DSTs for treating patients with knee osteoarthritis.
  2. To identify beliefs, knowledge, and information needs of patients with knee osteoarthritis, as well as their knowledge and attitudes towards shared decision-making.
  3. To develop a DST for patients with knee osteoarthritis candidates for primary total knee arthroplasty.
  4. To evaluate the effectiveness of this DST compared to usual care in reducing patients’ decisional conflict about the treatment to be applied, increasing their knowledge about the disease and available treatments, their ability to make an informed choice, and their satisfaction with the decision-making process.

Methodology:

  1. Systematic literature review.
  2. Focus groups with patients and professionals.
  3. Three phases of DST development:
    • A) Creation of a storyboard.
    • B) Development of the DST in web and paper format (patient and professional advisory groups).
    • C) Field testing (application of the DST to 30 patients).
  4. Randomized Controlled Trial to assess the effectiveness of the DST compared to usual care in reducing decisional conflict, increasing disease/treatment knowledge, improving informed choice, increasing satisfaction with the decision-making process, and decreasing regret about the decision.
