European Breastfeeding Week 2026

From 5 to 11 October, European Breastfeeding Week is celebrated, an initiative that highlights the importance of promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding as a key measure for promoting the health and well-being of mothers and babies.

Within this framework, the Directorate-General for Public Health, in coordination with the Directorate-General for Healthcare Programmes and with the collaboration of the Breastfeeding Committees of Primary and Hospital Care in the Canary Islands, is promoting the 3rd Canary Islands Regional Breastfeeding Campaign.

Under the slogan “Breastfeeding is health, bonding and sustainability. For its future, for everyone’s future”, the campaign highlights its benefits for the health of mothers and babies, the strengthening of the emotional bond, and its contribution to a more sustainable model of infant feeding.

Throughout this week, SESCS will be sharing different campaign messages on our social media channels addressing some of the key aspects of supporting breastfeeding: the importance of access to information and support from pregnancy onwards; support from families, the community and the workplace; coordination between healthcare professionals and services; and the need to protect breastfeeding also in special or emergency situations.

The campaign also highlights the importance of access to reliable, evidence-based information, as well as awareness of the resources and support networks available across the Canary Islands. Creating environments that accompany, protect and facilitate breastfeeding is a shared responsibility.

SESCS joins this initiative and supports the promotion of a breastfeeding-friendly Canary Islands, helping to raise awareness of the resources, knowledge and support networks available to families throughout the different stages of breastfeeding.
